Book Review: Gillian Flynn's Sharp Objects

Gillian Flynn seems to have become one of the most popular authors today, and I suspect her popularity is only just beginning. With two of her three novels set to be released on the silver screen soon, I was very curious if what I had been hearing about her stories were true. I had heard the words addicting, suspenseful, and disturbing. All of these words were intriguing, and I have to agree. After finishing Flynn’s 2006 novel, Sharp Objects, those are the perfect words to describe this story.

The story follows Chicago newspaper reporter Camille Preaker returning to her small hometown in Wind Gap, Missouri. There she investigates the recent murders of two young girls. The girls each died in a chillingly similar way and the town fears a serial killer is on the lose.

Before this assignment, Camille’s life had been nothing but easy. Her childhood was full of troubled relationships, a distant mother, and the death of her sister. Prior to her return to Wind Gap, Camille spent time in a psychiatric hospital trying to rid some of the demons she has been dealing with. As she returns to her childhood environment though, Camille discovers that her past may help solve who is behind the deaths of the young girls.

Staying in her mother’s mansion, Camille must interact with people she has hardly spoken to since she left Wind Gap. Her relationships with her mother, Adora, and her teenage half-sister, Amma, become twisted and propel the story into unsettling scenes.

Sharp Objects keeps you on your toes and the mystery will enthrall you until the very end. The grisly themes may a bit of a turnoff for some readers though. Forewarning: The chilling ending will stick with you long after you turn the final page.

Soon after I finished writing this review, I read this news.
