Summer doesn’t feel complete anymore without a big movie from Marvel studios. This year they went with a surprising group of misfits.
After Captain America 2 was released this April, audiences were in store for year-long wait for more characters in the Avenger’s universe. The lesser known Marvel characters of Guardian’s of the Galaxy will surely help fill the void, and further expand the universe.
The cast is lead by Chris Pratt, who plays Peter Quill, but prefers to be referred to as Star-Lord. Pratt, probably most known for playing goofy Andy on NBC’s Parks and Recreation, proves himself as a lead star. With a lead role in Jurassic World coming out next summer, Pratt is setting himself up nicely after Parks concludes after this season. The rest of the Guardians include a green Zoe Saldana as Gamora and Dave Bautista as warrior Drax. Vin Diesel voices the sweet tree Groot and Bradley Cooper voices the feisty raccoon Rocket. Audiences were briefly introduced to Benicio Del Toro’s The Collector and Josh Brolin's Thanos in previous Marvel Films, and it seems that their roles may be further expanded on in the future.
While the story and villains aren’t particularly unique from other superhero movies, watching the Guardians come together is highly entertaining. The film begins with Peter Quill stealing a mysterious orb, which is what leads Gamora, Groot, and Rocket to him as they each hope to capture what they need. As the Guardians band together to break out of prison (where they find a vengeful Drax), their dislike for each other slowly grows into friendship. They begin to realize just how powerful the orb is and that they need each other to save the galaxy.
Notably, the relationship between Groot and Rocket brings some of the funniest, and endearing, moments in the film. The film also brings some fun moments through music with an “Awesome Mix” that Quill’s mother gave to him before her death. The biggest mystery the film leaves us with is who Quill’s father is, which will probably be addressed in the sequels to come.
Overall, Guardians of the Galaxy is a fun movie that brings a nice pop of comic book color to the conclusion of the summer movie season.
