Melissa McCarthy is one of my favorites actresses in recent years. I always look forward to what character she has in store next, and Spy was one of the films I was most looking forward to this summer. Even though last summer’s Tammy was major letdown, Spy puts Melissa back on track. Reuniting with director Paul Feig (who also directed two of Melissa’s biggest hits, Bridesmaids and The Heat) this film showcases Melissa at her finest. She gets to play sweet, silly, and also sassy, all while using the physical comedy that she is so great at. While the title of the film isn’t too clever, it states exactly what is is about. In this film though, the person who gets to save the day isn’t your typical spy. Melissa’s character, Susan Cooper, has spent her time in the CIA behind a desk, assisting her handsome co-worker (Jude Law) while he goes on missions. After a tragedy occurs, Susan volunteers to go undercover to catch who is responsible. Goofy costumes, crazy characters, and mishaps happen as Susan travels around Europe. Rose Byrne plays the furious villain, but British actors Miranda Hart and Jason Statham really steal the show. The movie is a fun ride, and while I may have had too-high expectations, I hope that Susan Cooper gets another turn on the big screen.
