Movie Review: Inside Out

I think my favorite movie of the summer has arrived, and it stars a group of characters that are inside all of us. The story follows the journey of a young girl named Riley and her emotions as they try to support her as she and her parents move from the snowy, hockey-filled Minnesota to a foggy, broccoli pizza lovin’ San Francisco. The leader of Riley’s emotions is Joy, perfectly voiced by Amy Poehler, who tries to turn every moment into a happy one, which becomes increasingly harder to do. As Riley’s emotions become more complex, and she deals with the changes in her life, the emotions must figure out their role. The other voice actors include scene-stealer Phyllis Smith (Sadness), Bill Hader (Fear), Mindy Kailing (Disgust), Lewis Black (Anger), and Richard Kind (Bing Bong), who plays an imaginary friend who saves the day and will break your heart. The story is sweet, beautifully animated, and incredibly deep, as adults will see themselves in Riley. You won’t be able to walk away from the movie without a little more warmth in your heart and a curiosity about the emotions inside your own head.
