Pompom Sweatshirt

I had this idea for quite some time after seeing this trend in a few different places and clothing styles. Pompoms put a smile on my face, but I rarely find a good reason to use them. I thought the concept of putting it on a top would be easy enough, so I bought a few packs of different colored/sized pompoms and a sweatshirt.

What You’ll Need:
• Pompoms (I used store bought, medium sized, but you can always make your own as well!)
• Plain sweatshirt or sweater
• Needle/thread
• Fabric scissor
• Ruler
• Pen/Sharpie

Directions:
1. Cut your sweatshirt. If you like the way your sweatshirt is, then you don’t need to do anything. I purchased a plain gray Hanes sweatshirt at Walmart for about $6. They did not have any women’s sweatshirts, so I bought a men’s sweatshirt in size small. Because it was a men’s fit, I used a good fabric scissor to cut quite a bit off both sleeves and and the bottom. I wanted it to be more cropped, so I took quite a bit off the bottom. The sleeves were quite wide because of the men’s fit, but when cut and folded, it looked nice. The cut ends of the sweatshirt were left raw.

2. This is optional, but if you do cut the sweatshirt and want to add a bit more style, you can use a sewing machine to add a stitch near the ends of the sleeves and bottom. Instead of just keeping it completely raw/cut, the stitch adds a little bit more to the overall look and makes the finished product look more polished. I used a simple zig zag stitch along the edges.

3. Wether you add a stitch or not, the next step is preparing the pompoms!  To begin, choose your pompoms and lay out how you want them on the sweatshirt. Take a photo, or do a quick sketch on some paper, so that you can reference it later.

4. With the pompoms still arranged how you want them, take a pen or Sharpie and make small marks underneath. I did a small “x” where each pom pom was. This will help you know where each one should be spaced. Once done, you can remove the pompoms.

5. With your photo/sketch ready, begin attaching your pompoms one by one! To do this, simply thread your needle (I used a gray thread) and tie a knot at the end. Find your mark on the sweatshirt and bring the needle up and out from the inside, pulling it through the pom pom. If you are using the store-bought pompoms like me, you want to make sure to go completely through the harder center part of the pom pom. You want to make sure to thoroughly secure it, and if you don’t thread through that middle part, it won’t hold well. Go in and out of the pompom a few times to secure and then fasten by creating a knot while your needle is inside of the sweatshirt.

6. Continue the process for every pom pom until you are done! While I just randomly spaced the pompoms throughout the front of the sweatshirt, you can be more creative and use different sizes, just do the sleeves, attach them front and back, do just collar, try different color combinations, etc!

Here are some photos of the final product:

I just think this concept is so fun and bright! Although the shirt may not work with everything and may be better for certain events, it really puts a smile on my face. The men’s sweatshirt is a little more bulky than I maybe would have liked, but I was pleased I was able to change it enough to become a bit more feminine.
