Trendy Favorite: Choker Necklaces

One of my newest obsessions this summer has been the resurgence of the choker necklace. When I was a kid, I owned quite a few of those “tattoo” chokers, as well as  a few bracelet versions. I remember I owned them in black, rainbow, and black with beads. I kept them in a little container, where they would all get tangled up, but I remember always being impressed that they stayed in good condition and never broke. I also liked how much they would stretch, and go back into their shape when you let go. I especially remember wearing them a lot when I was in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade, before they seemed to go out of style. I don’t believe I have any of them left, but it is possible I kept one or two and put them into something in one of my old boxes of toys that we keep in storage.

I am really loving the return of the choker though, and while I don’t think I am going to buy one of those “tattoo” styles again (although I have been seeing quite a few of them out in stores!), I am especially loving the black cord chocker necklaces and I have managed to pick up a selection of them from a few different shops. I am posting the full price of each, but I got most of these on sale or at a discounted rate. I think these are such fun accessories to add to an outfit, without being too bulky or in the way like some jewelry can be.

Garage: $12.95
This was the first one I bought, which was a three pack. The package said that it was a choker set, but I was dissappointed when I opened it and only one of the them was an actual choker length. Each chain gradually got longer for each necklace, so you could wear them together, but I would have preferred them to all be the short length. I like all three necklaces though and will still use the silver gem and silver feather necklaces. They all clasp nicely and the choker stays in place pretty well. The only misfortune of this choker though is that the beading has two brown beads in a row (all of the necklaces in the store had this!). I don’t really notice too much, but when I do think about it, it is a bit odd.

Look at the two brown beads next to each other!

The other two necklaces that came in the pack (both are a medium length).

Urban Outfitters: $24
This one was the most expensive of the bunch, but I like the simplicity of it and how it goes with anything. The fake leather is a bit thinner than I would prefer, it feels bit fragile, but I really love the overall style of this choker. It is perfect to go with every outfit, making it very versatile and usable. The gem is a perfect little accent, and is nicely made. The biggest downfall of this one is that it only has two spots where you can clasp it together, so it can only lay at the bottom of the neck and doesn’t get very close fitting to the skin. I wish it was more adjustable and could get al little more tight against my neck.

Aeropostale: (Bethany Mota line) $20
I went into Aeropostale thinking it might be an unexpected place to find a choker necklace, and I ended up finding a surprise. I found a few full price chokers, which I thought were too expensive, but then found a bunch of jewelry on clearance, where I found this for only $2.99! This was a tiered three-pack, but I wanted it for the choker (although the other two necklaces aren’t bad, especially for the price!). I like that this one has a double layer chain and the little gold heart charm with gems is so cute! This one doesn’t seem to stay in place that great though (even if I have it more tight against my neck), and I have to check quite often that the back clasp hasn’t made its way to the front.

The other two necklaces that came in the pack (both are quite long).

Hot Topic: (Blackheart brand) $8.50
This set is surprisingly nice for the price. I got it for about 1/2 off during Hot Cash time. The three chains that come in the set are silver, gold, and black, which is a great mixture. It seems a bit harder to find chokers with different chain colors like silver or gold, so this will be nice to have some variety. The charms are pretty nice too, not overly cheap looking, and add a bit more color than the other chokers I have. These also have a lot of options along the chain on where to clasp it closed, so it stays nicely on the neck.

ASOS: $6.50
This is another choker that is great because it goes with almost everything. What I like about this one is that the accenting is in silver, since my other black corded chokers have a gold accent. This one (along with the Urban Outfitters one) are the chokers I have worn the most since purchasing them, because they go with so much. The little star is so quant, and adds a little something subtle. I also found that this one stays in place the best, with the clasp staying in the back longer instead of moving to the front. There are a lot of places you can clasp depending how loose or tight you want it, and this one get get the closest/tightest around the neck if desired, compared to the others.

I think I am pretty set with choker necklaces for now, and so far all of them have been holding up quite well. I have been wearing one almost every day, and have found it a fun task hunting down some deals. While I don't always like the newest trends or returns of old styles (except overalls, I will forever love those!) these are a fun way to remember my childhood, but also be a little more stylish than how I wore them the first time they came around in my lifetime.

I store the necklaces in this little blue spice bowl (they haven't gotten too tangled up yet!).

Wearing my favorite; the Urban Outfitters choker with gem!
