Between baking many Christmas cookies for family and having other homemade treats at this time of year, I haven’t really tried any store-bought snacks (except for a bag of Hammond's peppermint cotton candy, which I devoured very quickly). Besides enjoying my favorite treat of an eggnog latte, I haven’t really been overly interested in anything I’ve seen, until I found a few little holiday-themed snacks this week. All of these are something I haven’t had before, so I was excited to dig into these festive snacks!
Boom Chicka Pop Frosted Sugar Cookie Flavored Kettle Corn: I have been curious about some of these Boom Chicka Pop flavors, but thought they were a little expensive for the size of the bag. At a local grocery store though, these holiday flavors were 2 for $4, which I thought was a good deal, and thought now was the time to try it. I wasn’t sure if I would like this, but I also figured the sugar cookie flavor would be pretty safe. I was most worried that because it is a kettle corn, it would already be pretty sweet, so to have more sweetness on top may be too much. As soon as I ate a few pieces though, I was in love. The kettle corn aspect isn’t overly strong, and so while it is sweet, it is a pleasant sweet. Not every piece has much, but there is a nice drizzle of “frosting” and some pink sprinkles throughout creating the sugar cookie aspect. The overall flavor is a sugary vanilla and I really enjoyed the festive flavors of the popcorn. The little sprinkles also make if fun to look at.
Boom Chicka Pop White Chocolate and Peppermint Flavored Kettle Corn: So after trying the sugar cookie popcorn, I was curious how this would live up, and I gotta say, I think I liked this one even more! Similar to the other flavor, there is drizzle throughout, this time though it is white chocolate with red peppermint pieces. I taste the flavor in each bite, and it is both sweet a bit refreshing because of the mint flavor. The sugar cookie one would be fine to eat all year though, while this one is even more perfect for the holidays. I would absolutely buy both popcorns again and would try other flavors as well (there was also a dark chocolate sea salt one I did not get, and am now regretting)! In both, the popcorn is popped nicely and has a perfect crunch. I haven’t made it to the bottom of the bags yet to see how many crumbs are down there (which is always a bummer when there are a lot), but so far they seem great quality. I found this one especially hard to put the bag down and really enjoyed the peppermint flavor. I think this brings back memories for me because I used to mix Junior Mints candies into my popcorn as a kid, and loved how it tasted together.
Cinnamon Roll Peeps: For most of my life I thought Peeps were the most horrible candy, but in the past few years as they have been releasing special flavors and seasonal varieties and I have enjoyed trying a few. I didn’t think much about this cinnamon roll flavor when I got it, other than the fact that I am very fond of cinnamon, but once I tasted it, I really fell in love. For me, I think this is the best Peep I have ever had. It was very full of cinnamon flavor, and I definitely felt that the cinnamon roll effort was quite successful. If I didn’t know this was cinnamon roll though, I may have guessed that it was churro. Considering both would have a cinnamon and vanilla/dough flavor, they would be a similar mixture. Of the Peeps I have tried at this point, this is the only one that I feel I would gladly buy again. I believe it was last year I tried peppermint-flavored Peeps that were dipped in dark chocolate, and those were probably my second favorite flavor I have tried. The marshmallow on this was very soft and I think what works well for me in this is that the fudge dip is quite complementary, without being really overpowering.
Fudge Stripe Peppermint: In a few of my past Taste Tests I have tried these “Limited Batch” Fudge Stripe cookies (in pumpkin spice and birthday cake flavors), and they are one of my favorites. When I spotted these, I gasped because I felt that peppermint would work perfectly. This was also the first time I spotted these limited flavors at Target, which was nice, because I usually I have to look around more to find them. When you look at the cookie, you can see the red specks of peppermint, and when you bite into it, there is a very subtle pink tone to the crisp cookie. There are more bits of peppermint crunch than you would expect, which makes it very yummy. This would be quite good crumbled on top of some ice cream. The peppermint and white chocolate mix usually always works well for me, and in these cookies the flavor and crispness shines. I haven’t had a Fudge Stripe cookie yet that I haven’t liked, and this one is my new favorite.
I think this is probably my most successful taste test, because I enjoyed everything and would buy each of the items again. I had a bit of a sugar headache after trying them all at once, but it was worth it. All the peppermint and cinnamon made me feel warm and very full of Christmas joy.
