Duluth, Minnesota: Top Picks!

Ship Canal

The ship canal is a great first-stop in Duluth to view the waterfront of Lake Superior, have a bite to eat, and shop at some quaint stores. Candy, toys, Minnesota gifts, and lake gear can all be found here.

Vitta Pizza

Located on Canal Park Drive, Vitta Pizza was a spot I stopped at on a whim. It ended up being a delicious experience with fresh ingredients, local ownership, and unique selections.

Two Harbors

A short drive on the scenic byway will lead you to Two Harbors. There are many beautiful photo opportunities along the way, additional shopping, and restaurants (including the popular Betty’s Pies.) My favorite stop is the Ore Docks, which is the perfect spot to take a snack and snap a few photos!

Gooseberry Falls

Also in the Two Harbors area, you will find Gooseberry Falls. Camping, hiking, and skiing are popular here, but the thunderous falls are a must-see for anyone in the area.

Glensheen Historic Estate

Looking over the water, this historic mansion features beautiful landscaping, terraced gardens,  and exquisite interior designs. Taking a tour of the estate is a special experience full of history and intrigue. Built in 1908, for the Congdon family, the house features 39 rooms to explore.   Although the mansion has a bit of a dark past (the murder of Elisabeth Congdon and her nurse, by Elizabeth’s adopted daughter) the tour guides focus on the positive history and architecture of the home.

The PortLand Malt Shoppe

Whenever I go to Duluth, I have to stop at the PortLand Malt Shoppe. Open from April to October, the charming little store has many flavors to choose, each topped with whipped cream, a wafer cookie, and a cherry. The malts are a bit expensive ($6.50), but worth it for the quality and uniqueness of the experience. If you stay at the shop, it overlooks a beautiful view of Lake Superior to make your treat even more enjoyable.
