Overalls: Summer to Fall

In 1983, my mom, Constance Collette, was 24 years old. Living in Minnesota, she taught special education to elementary school children. As I was looking through old photos, I noticed that what she was wearing in this photo was one of my favorite clothing items when I was a girl growing up in the 1990s. What was this item? Overalls.

I was born at the end of 1991, and while I had my share of awkward outfits and hairstyles growing up, overalls were the one item that 5-year old me thought was the ultimate stylish look. These delightful duds made me feel happy and carefree. I remember a girl in my 3rd grade class had an amazing pair that flared at the bottom, with a triangle of silky colored fabric peeking out of the denim flare. I  still think about those beauties today.

To my excitement overalls returned this year for yet another generation to clip those straps together. This time around they are cuter and come in even more styles for whatever temperature or mood you encounter.

After searching many stores for deals, I bought a few shortalls this past spring, which ended up becoming my favorite item of the summer.

Not only are they extremely comfortable (minus the minor going-to-the-bathroom struggle), but they are fun to mix with different patterns and styles of tops. Now that the fall season is right around the corner, I don’t want to pack up these comfy duds away for the rest of the year. Here is how I am going to wear them through the next few seasons by combining a warm sweater, black tights, and booties!

Shortalls: Cotton On
Sweater: Forever 21

Shortalls: Urban Outfitters
Sweater: Topshop

Tights: Target
Booties: Madden Girl

My favorite season to dress for is fall, since the weather allows for a mix of summer and winter. I think these outfits will be a delightful and cozy way to continue wearing my favorite fashion trend. A cute scarf and coat will also finish the outfit well, especially as it gets more and more chilly in parts of the country.
