Simply put, what a magical film! From the trailers you could tell that Disney’s newest telling of Cinderella would be beautiful, but it really is a treat for the eyes and soul. While the story may not be new, I found myself engrossed just as I was the first time I heard the tale. It is a sweet story, with a focus on kindness and courage above all, and it makes for the perfect escape from a sometimes very unkind world.
Lily James and Richard Madden are perfectly cast as the classic characters Cinderella and Prince Charming. They had an easy, warm chemistry, plus Downton Abbey and Game of Thrones fans (like me) should be excited to see them on the big screen. Cate Blanchett is excellently icy as the stepmother and Helena Bonham Carter appears as the Fairy Godmother (and narrator of the film.) The most memorable scene is predictably when Cinderella is transformed for the ball and the famous glass slipper is finally revealed. I was especially interested in how the animals would be featured in the film and enjoyed seeing them come alive, especially as they are altered to bring Cinderella to the ball. The music of Disney’s classic animated version is also subtly featured with a little “Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo” from Helena Bonham Carter and “A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes” sung from Lily James in the credits.
Even if you find the story over-told, the rush of imagination from the colors, the costumes and the scenery will delight you. Cinderella is the perfect kickoff to spring, and it will leave you feeling warm and happy.
