I am a big Keebler Fudge Stripe Cookie fan. There is just something about them that reminds me of being a kid. When I was little I held them in such high regard; they were the cookies I would pick if I were allowed a special treat. The chocolate fudgy-ness is so yummy against the buttery shortbread cookie. I’ve always found that these really are cookies that could be eaten one after another after another if you aren’t careful.
Similar to Oreo’s trend of creating limited edition flavors, the Keebler Elf has released a limited Birthday Cake version of Fudge Stripes. I have seen a few different flavors released over the years (including cookies and cream, red velvet, and oatmeal) but these “limited batch” versions seem to be more special. The first time I heard about about limited batch flavors was last fall, with the release of Pumpkin Spice Fudge Stripe Cookies. These seemed right up my alley, so I knew I had to try to track them down. While very different from the traditional chocolatey Fudge Stripe Cookies, they were so scrumptious. It was a nutmeg/cinnamon spiced cookie with white chocolate fudge. I ate these up very quickly with some autumn tea!
I’m not someone who is super into the “birthday cake” flavor trend, but the birthday cake flavor combined with one of my favorite cookies made me excited.
Opening the package up, I got a strong vanilla/almond smell. The cookie itself looked nice and the color scheme certainly resembled that of a traditional birthday cake. I wondered if the white fudge would be the same as the pumpkin spice cookies I mentioned, which had a vanilla, almost cream cheese, taste to them.
My first bite was good. It maybe didn’t scream birthday cake, because there does seem to be a more of an almond taste than vanilla. I love almond though, so I was pleased with the shortbread’s flavor. The white fudge was a bit too sweet, but with the shortbread, it balances out fine.
The cookies are very light and crisp, like traditional Fudge Stripe cookies are. There are little bursts of color from the sprinkles baked into the cookie, that really gives it a “birthday cake” feel. I have never been fond of the taste or texture of sprinkles though, and I felt like I could taste them in this cookie. There is a slight extra had “crunch” inside the cookie from these sprinkles.
Overall, these are quite tasty and a fun change from the original cookie. I wouldn’t say I liked them as much as the original (or the pumpkin spice version), but these were definitely worth a taste! I think I will be enjoying this with some ice coffee throughout the next few weeks.
I have a few more snack food taste tests to share over the next two days, so stay tuned!
