Other than Fudge Stripes I have always had a liking for Oreos. I don’t get them too often, but cookies and cream using Oreos is my favorite thing in ice cream as well as other desserts. Every since Nabisco has started releasing these limited flavors though, it is hard to pass them up. I have been able to try a selection of the flavors (red velvet, marshmallow crispy, watermelon, caramel apple, toasted coconut, and brownie batter), but it seems like there have been more and more flavors released in a short amount of time. It is just too many cookies to eat alone! Plus, some are only sold in certain stores, and can be a bit harder to track down (I’m still bummed I couldn’t find the key lime pie, fruit punch, or root beer float in time). So I try to pick out one every so often. I do appreciate that the packs aren’t TOO huge, but I wish that they would sell small 6-cookie packs so I would be able to try more flavors.
I do tend to prefer when the wafer cookie itself is chocolate, because the “golden” Oreo, whether it is graham or vanilla, just doesn’t feel like I am eating an Oreo. Of the special Oreos I have tried, I liked the brownie batter the most, probably because it still felt close to a real Oreo, with the chocolate cookies sandwiched around yummy brownie batter flavored filling. I probably would have liked the more recent “filled cupcake” flavor that was released, or the “cookie dough” from a while back, because it had the chocolate wafer. When the wafer isn’t chocolate, it just seems like a flavored sandwich cookie to me.
A few weeks ago I had a package of Strawberry Shortcake Oreos in my cart at Walmart, but ditched them before I made it to the checkout. During my last trip to Target though, I saw these Blueberry Pie Oreos, and thought that these seemed like something I may really like. The blueberry flavor seemed more offbeat and I have surprisingly enjoyed the more fruity Oreos that I have tried, so I thought that I might like these, even though they didn’t have the chocolate cookie. This flavor is only available at Target, and I figured I should try it before they disappear and a new flavor arrives.
I usually like the way these limited flavors are packaged, with a sticky re-seal front, but I was disappointed that this package did not feature it. Disappointment aside, my first thought opening these cookies was that the purple/blue center was really pretty, and almost whimsical. The color got me more excited to try the cookie.
I smelled the cookies and didn’t really get a whiff of anything berry. I opened up the cookie and licked just the frosting, and there it was, a very perfect blueberry taste. It really was full of a sweet blueberry taste! The color and flavor were really perfectly well done together and it didn’t taste too unnatural or overly fake, although it maybe could have been a bit more tangy like real blueberries can often be.
I then ate the actual cookie, with both the wafer and creme together. The wafer cookie itself is graham, which I suppose acts as the “pie crust” aspect of blueberry pie. The whole cookie was really quite pleasant, but I got more of a blueberry muffin or blueberry pancake taste from it. I maybe would have preferred the more vanilla Golden Oreo instead of graham, since that would have added more of a buttery feel that a pie crust has.
I’ll admit though, I grabbed another as soon as I finished the first cookie, which seems like a good sign. As I ate them, I began to wonder if Nabisco could try other pie or muffin flavors in their future, since this one works quite well. The Blueberry Pie Oreo is really just a pleasantly nice mix overall and really nice for something different this summer. It could be fun to use in other treats as well!
